As spring comes to Kansas City, we've been feeling the need to get something in the ground. Brandon cleared a space in the vacant lot next door, our landlord gave us some border fence, and we went shopping.
We mostly bought tomatoes: Husky Cherry Red, Roma, Big Beef, Goliath, Patio (Hello, Patio!) and BEEF MASTER. Also some peppers and a boxwood basil, plus some dill and sage seeds.
Yes, there is a post in the middle of the garden. It's, uh, decorative, right?
You say tomato.
Also, this!

You will have to tell us what you're going to do with dill.
Ick.
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Did I ever tell you I had an English teacher who made us memorize part of the Prologue of the Canterbury Tales? Quite possibly the hardest thing I've ever done. Well, that and giving birth...I'm not sure in what order.
Curse Utah's unnaturally late last frost date. I'm jealous of your garden. Maybe I'll just start ours and pray we don't repeat last year...or the year before...or the year before
And Chris, I have a great recipe for salmon cakes that uses dill. It's fast and easy too. If u want it, let me know. :)
I want that dog!
Rebecca: I'll confess, I (Alison) didn't even think about last frost dates--Brandon is spearheading this project. But we've had many warm days lately and it looks like more warm days ahead (i.e. highs in the 70s and maybe even 80s next week). So hopefully we're OK!
Chris: Among other things, this: http://thefoodprojects.com/recipes/?p=32
Also, the seed package described dill as "easy to grow." So that was a major plus!
LOL! I hear peas are also easy to grow...at least in cold weather...although admittedly I've never done it.
Ah, the 70s. We're only in the 50s here. Although that's a heck of a lot better than the 30s we were in a few weeks ago.
It looks like a pencil sticking out of the ground. I think you should paint it that way.
Oh my. Go quickly and definitively with "pencil." Yellow paint with black markings.
Because meanwhile, the "post" is so repellent . . . and yet . . . strangely attractive. :-)
